At school many of us had dreams and aspirations very likely to be different from what job we are actually in now or where we “ended up” after finishing school. Careers guidance and after school can be mixed and so in this article we will explore what is being taught at schools and what can be done to change employment patterns societal attitudes and career choices.

Spoilt For Choice

At school there are a wide and diverse range of subjects which become even more expansive at university of college. However despite the range of courses available children of secondary school ages are often urged towards more traditional subjects such as English, maths and science. However more and more frequently children are giving feedback to their peers and parents as well teachers explaining that they do not enjoy the subject and have little desire to pursue it.

This clearly illustrates that to some degree attitudes should change towards subjects and they should be more based around what the pupil wants to do rather than their parents on the school. However a counter argument to this may be that to a certain extent both English and maths are used in everyday life and work and are desirable skills for many employers. However another issues many students and schoolkids face is the sheer range of subjects they have to choose from. often subject choice can be difficult due to the different number of courses available.

General Education

Whilst curriculum’s are changing across the UK and becoming more modern , there is still along way to for them to come to get them in line with society and its advancements. For example banking and taxes is an issue that affects all of us but there is little information on budgeting or banking/finance available in schools. Further issues that are covered minimally in schools are job applications and interview technique. Although most schools do have careers advisers or career hubs they are often lacking in practical skills and tips which are up to date with the current employment market across the united kingdom. Furthermore large numbers of  schools across the UK try and encourage /guide their pupils towards university. However many students may find college more beneficial as college is more of a similar environment to school and provides better support than university to many students in several different ways.

University Life

Many students after leaving school prepare to continue their education journey into university. However almost equally as many may not be fully prepared for what uni has to throw at them. University can be a challenging time as students are still developing as adults all whilst to manage money , studies , social lives and a change of environment. Many new students struggle to adapt to uni and may fall behind in subjects due to lack of study habits or failing to use the resources they have access to at university.  Overall education and university are big issues within society but there is still some lack of understanding surrounding them.
