You can easily encourage your children to spend more time outside by modelling your love for nature and showing your interest in the outdoors. Try talking positively about the outdoors and substitute negative language with positive words. Spend as much time outdoors as you can and you will see that your child will develop a lifelong love of nature. You can even try having regular picnics with your child in the parc or forest. After all, spending time outdoors should be a part of your child’s normal life.
Children are naturally curious about nature and animals. By exposing them to nature, they will become curious about other things and develop an interest in exploring new things. For example, by watching the ladybugs in the garden, they will learn how to identify flowers, birds, and other creatures. Similarly, they will develop a love for bigger animals, such as frogs, birds, and even dinosaurs. Incorporating these elements into their lives will foster your child’s interest in the world around him.
It is also beneficial to allow your kids to explore nature through playtime. Let them help you take care of your pets, this will teach them responsibility when they come in contact with nature. Talking about nature and referencing it in everyday life will imprint its value in their minds. For older kids, you can take along a notebook and let them draw what they see and hear in the outdoors.
Incorporating eco-friendly lifestyle changes into your household is another great way to teach your children to love nature. Consider purchasing eco-friendly products and gadgets. These will reduce your carbon footprint and promote recycling.
Another great way to reinforce your commitment to nature is to create family traditions centred around the outdoors. Having a family party marking the seasons is another wonderful way to teach kids about nature. Activities during the winter months may include playing in the snow, observing the early sunset, or carving pumpkins. Make these traditions easy and special. The best part is that they are easy to implement! Just be sure that they feel special.
Besides a strong desire to explore, children must be able to use their five senses to appreciate the natural world. While exploring a lake or body of water, they can also observe the animals, smells, and sounds that are present in nature. Children should be able to explore nature in all its forms. You should never restrict them from playing outdoors because the natural environment is full of wonder. There are endless things they can do outdoors. The more time you spend with your children in nature, the more likely they will be to enjoy the benefits of spending time in nature.
